Murali Guthikonda, M.D.

Chairman and Professor of Neurological Surgery

Dr. Guthikonda is board certified in neurological surgery. He specializes in skull base surgery, a type of neurosurgery for the management of lesions located at the base of the skull, beneath the brain. Formerly inaccessible and inoperable, these lesions may now be managed through advanced neurosurgical and microsurgical techniques. He uses innovative techniques to treat tumors of the skull base, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, pituitary tumors, complex aneurysms, and cerebral vascular malformations.

Dr. Guthikonda is the author of numerous articles and a frequent lecturer throughout the United States and India on topics related to skull base surgery. He is currently involved in laboratory research to further the understanding of skull base anatomy and surgical techniques.

He attended medical school at Guntur Medical College at Andhra University in India. He later completed surgical and neurosurgical residencies at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngston, Ohio and the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont at the University of Vermont in Burlington. He received additional fellowship training in skull base surgery, endoscope assisted neurosurgery, and Gamma Knife radiosurgery.

He serves as Chief of Skull Base Surgery for the Detroit Medical Center as well as Chairman and Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
